prefect

I realised that when yesterday Shee Yun commented about Chen Rui's hair bun (which was tied by Michelle) being like my handiwork, it may not mean my skills are poor. It may simply be because Chen Rui's hair is shorter, so it is more difficult to tie a nice bun. I asked Shee Yun how well I tied hair buns (in Michelle's presence), and she said "可以". I'm not sure whether she meant "well", or "passable". I then asked her whether I tied hair buns better or Michelle. She seemed to sense that it was a test, since both Michelle and I were paying close attention to what she was going to say. She pointed at both of us and said both were best. Hmm... maybe she was being diplomatic.

15 Feb 2012. Shee Yun and her Ah Gong and Ah Ma.

Shee Yun often speaks about wanting to be a prefect at school. I think only pupils from Primary 3 onwards can become prefects. Most of the pupils in her class seem to be keen to become prefects. I guess it's natural for people to like "pangkat". We take the opportunity to tell her that in order to be selected to become a prefect, she needs to be strong and brave and not cry easily, and she needs to do well in her studies and do revision herself often. A few days ago she told us that she woke up in the middle of the night to pee, and afterwards she did some revision. This morning she woke up by herself at about 7am and turned on her table lamp to do some revision.

Michelle is starting to get Shee Yun to pack her own school bag now. I think it's good to learn this from young, so that she can be independent and learn to take responsibility.

We are thinking of sending the children for abacus class (珠心算). They already have many tuition classes and extra classes, so we were initially a little reluctant, especially considering that they go to school in different sessions (morning and afternoon) this year, and our weekly schedule is very packed, with not much flexible time left. However when we asked Shee Yun, she was keen to do the abacus class. She even commented that she wants to be busy. So now we are trying to arrange a time for one more weekly class. We asked Chen Rui whether she wanted to take the abacus class, and she said no at first. Shee Yun persuaded her, and soon she said "Okay" in a mock grudging manner. I think she is quite neutral about taking extra lessons, and would just do what we ask her to do.
