unemployed

Today is the last day of my current contract with Shell, so I will be temporarily unemployed starting tomorrow. Yesterday Michelle told the children that I would be soon unemployed. My first thought was they would immediate ask "What's employed?". To my surprise, Shee Yun's first response was shock that no one will hire Baba? That I won't have a job. She not only understood "unemployed", she also knew "hire" and "job". I wonder whether she learned these from playing iPad games. Or maybe from watching TV.

Now that the children are going to school in different sessions, we need to remind them that sometimes we may be late in fetching them from school, that they need to be patience and not be afraid. Michelle told them that they should not panic. I thought they would not understand what "panic" was, but both of them understood. Shee Yun tried to explain to me in words. Chen Rui directly acted it out. She waved both arms high in the air, walked around the room in jittery motions, lolled her tongue about, rolled her eyes, and made pretend-screaming sounds. That's quite graphical. She made her point clearly.

8 Jan 2012. We visited Meeples Cafe. I went to buy boardgames because of their members day sale. We brought the children there to play games. Michelle and Chen Rui were a team in Captain Clueless. Chen Rui was the captain and had to draw a path without looking at the board, while Michelle gave limited directions.

They won (red team) and Chen Rui was quite pleased.

The Kids of Catan

Chen Rui won this too.

Shee Yun says I tie her hair quite well now. Her requirements are quite low. As long as the bun I tie is flat enough, she's happy. I know my handiwork is still quite a mess, requiring about 12 to 14 hair clips to keep everything in place, and then not even in a very tidy manner. But at least the whole thing is still intact after she finishes school, and from a distance she looks neat.

When Chen Rui asks about the time, she says "现在几点半?". I don't know why she does that. Maybe we happen to answer her "half past something" quite often. So she thinks the 半 should naturally be part of the question.

Wow, so, what are your plans? Do you have something lined up? You sound quite cool about it, which is great. How do you feel about it all?

Good luck in your next venture, whatever you decide to do!

Originally I was planning to take 2 months off and take my time to find a new job, however an opportunity came up, and I'm now trying to get a short project (also contract basis) which may start as soon as mid Feb. If I get this one, I will still have flexibility to work from home most of the time, which is the main reason I am interested in it. So to me it will be like continuing to do the same thing, with a short break in between. My plan for a longer break would just be postponed by half a year.
