school day 2

22 Dec 2008. Shee Yun and Chen Rui playing before bedtime.

I have no idea why Chen Rui has that evil look.

Today Michelle brought both Shee Yun and Chen Rui to school, for the one-hour orientation. Shee Yun overslept, so Michelle brought Chen Rui there first, and later at 9am came back to fetch Shee Yun. Chen Rui had no problem whatsoever, and in fact seemed to be enjoying herself. She seemed to be wondering why some of her classmates were crying and making a big fuss. She was very at home. She saw a tin of biscuits (transparent plastic container with a red cap) and helped herself to it. She brought it to the floor, and pointed at it saying she wanted to have some. So the teacher opened it and distributed the biscuits to the class. After Chen Rui finished her biscuits she asked for more.

Shee Yun didn't want to go to school. She cried. This was rather unexpected. Vicky, Shee Yun's best friend at school, was also like that. Their previous class teacher advised that they can stay with the 3-year-old class temporarily, and only later move on to the 4-year-old class. So, maybe Shee Yun and Chen Rui will be classmates for a short while. The 4-year-old class teacher seemed to be rather fierce. Michelle saw her scolding a young boy, telling him to go ahead and cry by himself. I hope that's not normal. I hope it was only because the boy had been misbehaving badly, causing such a scolding.

first day at school

29 Dec 2008. Michelle, Chen Rui and Shee Yun, all in pink, at Oldtown Kopitiam. We went there to celebrate our 7th anniversary.

Shee Yun and Chen Rui played with the sugar holder. It spinned easily on the table. Thankfully they didn't spill any sugar onto the table.

This is how Chen Rui opens her mouth very widely when she is being fed.

Shee Yun likes this kaya butter toast a lot. We always cut it up into triangles for her, so that it is not too big.

30 Dec 2008. Chen Rui in school uniform.

No we didn't let her bring her hajimat to school.

Chen Rui went to school for the first day today. School has not started yet, but today and tomorrow there is kind of an orientation, for the new pupils to get used to the new environment. Class is only for one hour. Chen Rui dressed up in full school uniform. When Shee Yun first went to school she was not willing to wear the school uniform. It took quite some time to convince her. Chen Rui had no problems at all at school. Michelle described her as, "steady". After Michelle left her with the teacher, Chen Rui just concentrated on her lesson, and followed the teacher's instructions. She didn't cry or ask for Michelle or appear in any way uncomfortable. I guess she is already familiar with the environment. She usually accompanies Michelle when Michelle sends Shee Yun to school, and she plays there for a while before Michelle leaves. So she is probably looking forward to go to school. Let's see how she does in the next few days and weeks.

Tomorrow Michelle will bring Shee Yun to school too for this orientation. Today at school Michelle found out that most of Shee Yun's classmates were also there. The orientation was not only for new joiners.

Chen Rui nowadays says many things that I don't understand. I am happy that she is learning to talk, and I look forward to be able to converse with her. We can communicate in simple phrases, but she hasn't starting saying complete sentences.

Chen Rui is shy of Simon. Today when Simon came downstairs, she disappeared. Michelle and I kept calling for her and trying to find her. Eventually Michelle found her hiding behind the fridge in the kitchen. I carried her and asked her to greet Simon and call him "uncle", but she turned around and hugged me tightly and didn't want to face Simon. Then when Simon was going out, I asked her to wave goodbye, and her mood changed 180 degrees. She waved goodbye enthusiastically and smiled happily, and even gave a flying kiss when I asked her too. We need to ask her to say goodbye in order to get her to be friendly with strangers.

7th anniversary

21 Dec 2008. Shee Yun feeling cheeky.

Chen Rui playing with something that is not a toy.

Michelle and I did our marriage registration on 22 Apr 2000, and had our formal wedding ceremony and main wedding reception in KK on 29 Dec 2001. I still remember when I was fetching the bride and the "sisters" asked to me draw a vision for Michelle and I in ten years' time, I drew both of us with 10 children. Since there are only 3 more years to go, we probably will not meet this target.

I was in Singapore for a meeting today (flew down yesterday), and only got back home at about 5:30pm. We went to Oldtown Kopitiam for dinner as celebration. Chen Rui had Ipoh ho fun. Shee Yun had some ice-cream with strawberry topping, and kaya butter toast. We let Chen Rui try some warm honey lemon drink, and she liked it. We used a spoon to feed it to her. Whenever she is fed, she still opens her mouth very very wide. 很用力. She even wrinkles up her nose and eyes. It's quite funny to watch.

guaguadai

20 Dec 2008. Chen Rui at Popular Bookstore. She took an interest in this book immediately, because it's all about green objects.

She pointed at this and told me repeatedly "Teddy!"

Chen Rui wanted to climb onto my back and kept saying, "到煦芸". I have not managed to correct her.

21 Dec 2008. My two precious daughters.

It is not often that I can convince both of them to sit still long enough to take a photo like this. Also Shee Yun tends to be camera shy. Chen Rui tends to want to play with the camera and look at the screen.

Simon is in town, here on a shopping trip, and is staying with us. Shee Yun is curious about our guest. She is interested in Simon and keeps observing him, but she is too shy to approach him, or even to call him "uncle". When I asked her to greet him she just smiled shyly.

Chen Rui sometimes also can be shy. Yesterday Chee Seng, Sui Jye and Jing Yi came to play boardgames, and when Chen Rui felt shy, she lowered her head, and covered her eyes with her fists, as if she was crying. She wasn't. She was just shy. But when it was time to wave goodbye she wasn't shy at all. She happily waved goodbye to them, and when I asked her to, she even gave a flying kiss. She seems to enjoy the act of waving goodbye itself.

Yesterday Shee Yun had her weekly art class, and Michelle waited for her outside the classroom, reading. Halfway through she heard Shee Yun laugh very loudly. I wonder what the teacher (or a fellow classmate?) said to her. She seems to be doing alright at the art class. After the class Michelle asked the teacher whether Shee Yun did most of the colouring. The teacher said, "也有啦" ("she did do some), that means she probably did a little and the teacher had to do most of it. Well, this was just her third lesson. Hopefully she will gradually learn to do more and more of the colouring by herself.

Sometimes when Shee Yun sees the sunny sky outside, she tells us, "It's day! It's play time!". I think this is something she learned from the Magic English DVDs. There is one episode titled "Night and Day". Michelle told me that she ofter says to Shee Yun (in the evening), "It's night. It's bedtime." So, Shee Yun, who usually doesn't want to sleep, likes to emphasise to Michelle that it's play time, so that Michelle won't ask her to go to sleep.

Today Chen Rui said something that surprised me and made me laugh. We went to the library today, and when I was showing her a book with many cartoon animals in many colours, she pointed at one of the pages and said, "guaguadai". It was a crocodile!

Chen Rui's version of "triangle" is evolving. It is not "ahgo" anymore. I can't quite say it. It seems to be something between "ahgo" and "triangle", with two syllables. She is also getting closer to be able to say "rectangle". When she wants to continue to watch 弟子规 after I have turned it off (because it was nap time or bed time), she pleads, "Nanagui!". Maybe this is a combination of 那个 and 弟子规.

Chen Rui still likes to join Michelle and I at the table when we are eating. Shee Yun doesn't bother us. Usually when we offer Chen Rui something to eat she refuses. One thing that she likes (which she asks for and we do not offer to her), is tea with milk. She points at it and says 那个 (which sounds like 拿尬 / na3 ga4). And we will give her a little using the teaspoon.

Shee Yun likes to sit or lie down on our laps. When watching TV, and if we are around, she comes to us and sits or lies down comfortably on our laps. I guess she feels safe and loved this way.

dramatic

13 Dec 2008. Chen Rui looks like she knows how to ride the tricycle, but she doesn't, yet.

Chen Rui at Ah Yau's home, enjoying a packet drink. It was actually mine. I let her taste it, and she liked it, and she took it.

20 Dec 2008. Shee Yun and I, at Leisure Mall waiting for Popular Bookstore to open. We didn't realise that they only open at 11am.

Chen Rui can be quite dramatic at times. Yesterday when she saw Shee Yun taking Mei's guitar and asking me to play it for her, she also supported Shee Yun. At the time I was having dinner so I told Shee Yun later. When Chen Rui saw that I wouldn't budge, she actually started crying. Not the kind of loud bad-tempered crying, but the kind of very 委屈 and pitiful silent crying. Poor girl. Her eyes were all red. Thankfully I was about to finish my dinner, so I quickly finished up and played the guitar for them. Then she started smiling and dancing.

Two nights ago Chen Rui also cried when I tured off the 弟子规 VCD. It's actually an MTV which we repeat for the children maybe once every 10 minutes. It was bedtime (just before 9pm), so I waited until the song ended, and stopped it before it repeated yet again. Chen Rui cried very pitifully - face and eyes all red and tears rolling down her cheeks. I carried her in my arms to comfort her. Soon she calmed down, and later fell asleep.

Last night when she was watching 弟子规 again, Shee Yun said she wanted to watch Tom & Jerry. So I waited until the 弟子规 song ended. As I prepared to take a Tom & Jerry DVD from the DVD album, Chen Rui walked over, and crossly flipped the album close. She wanted to watch 弟子规. She likes it a lot. I watched her and was surprised to see how she imitated the children in the MTV. She imitated the singing, and the narrations (朗诵). She imitated the dancing and the various gestures. She didn't do them very well, but it was very obvious that she was trying to do what the children in the MTV were doing. I was quite amazed.

Chen Rui actually doesn't cry a lot. Not at all. It is just these few situations that she cries, which I think is rather overly dramatic.

One nice thing that Chen Rui likes to do is to take our shoes for us when we prepare to go out. She often does this for Shee Yun. She takes Shee Yun's red Crocs shoes and places them on the ground, inviting Shee Yun to put them on. Michelle told me that yesterday she did this even with my shoes! I wonder whether she is impatient and wants us to hurry up.

It has been quite some time since we let Shee Yun and Chen Rui watch 弟子规. To my surprise Shee Yun still remembers many of the words, and could sing along for many parts. She doesn't really know the words or understand the meaning. She learned purely from listening to the MTV, and it is not easy because you can't really hear all the pronounciation clearly. So she got some of the words wrong. Michelle and I can read, so we can tell what her mistakes are. But we probably would have done worse if we had to learn by listening only.

吓到 me 啊

13 Dec 2008. One of the techniques to keep Shee Yun and Chen Rui quiet when we are busy grocery shopping / checking out is to give them each a small packet of titbits.

They certainly were enjoying it very much.

It is fun seeing Chen Rui learn to talk. When she wants to say that she was shocked or surprised, she says, "吓到 me 啊", a mix of Mandarin and English. She can say eyebrow now (眉毛), although she sounds like mei4mo3 or mei4ma3.

When Michelle makes the "chugga chugga" train sound, Chen Rui pretends to be a train, moving her hands like a steam engine, and walking around the room. Occasionally she pretends to use one hand to pull the train's whistle, and makes the "ooo ooo" sound.

Today is Christmas day. We went to Tesco. We bought half a dozen of donuts from Big Apple as a small celebration. Shee Yun and Chen Rui are always interested to watch the staff make donuts. However we rarely buy donuts because they are rather expensive, and usually even when we ask Shee Yun whether she wants one, she says no. Today we asked her again. She seems to be interested, but shy. Michelle said that Shee Yun has been interested in the pink panther donut (strawberry flavoured, and very pink indeed) for a long time. I thought I remember seeing it labeled pink twister. I asked Shee Yun whether she wanted to try some donuts. She was shy, but after some encouragement she timidly nodded. So we went to choose donuts. She chose the pink panther and also the alien (curly chocolate flakes and thin pink stripes forming a starburst). I chose the rest.

After we got home, she had the pink panther, but didn't finish it. She licked the cream like she was eating an ice-cream. She also tried the alien, but after having a lick, she didn't want it anymore. Maybe the chocolate flavour was too strong. She did eat about half of the pink panther. Later she started poking her finger at the toppings of the other donuts, and then licking her finger. She had a wet hankerchief on standby right in front of her so that she could wipe her finger any time. She did this for quite some time until she was satisfied with the donut tasting (as opposed to donut eating).

are you a baby?

13 Dec 2008. Shee Yun and I at Tesco's toys aisle.

This car has a phone.

Chen Rui

Shee Yun wanted to play with this trampoline, but I said no. Don't want to leave shoeprints on it.

Today Michelle asked Chen Rui, "Are you a baby?". Chen Rui seemed to understand, and she nodded. Then Michelle asked Shee Yun, "Are you a baby?". Before Shee Yun said anything, Chen Rui interrupted and objected, "No!". So I guess she really does understand. After that I asked Chen Rui the same thing in Chinese, "晨睿你是不是 baby?". She nodded. Also when we ask Chen Rui "Are you OK?", she always nods. I wonder whether it is just a habit or she actually understands.

Michelle brought the girls to the swimming pool today. It was a cloudy day, so that's good. Chen Rui had her nap, so Michelle sent Shee Yun and Sopiah there first, and came home to wait for Chen Rui to wake up from her sleep. She can do this when I work at home. Chen Rui only woke up at 3:30pm, so Michelle only brought her to the pool then. Well, the pool closes at 4:30pm, so there's still enough time for Chen Rui to play.

In the late afternoon Michelle asked Shee Yun what she wanted to have for dinner. She suggested, "Pork ball?" Shee Yun shook her head. Then she tried, "Fish ball?". Shee Yun shook her head again. Then Michelle whispered conspiratorially in Shee Yun's ear, "How about sausage?" (actually she meant hotdogs) Shee Yun whispered back, "Sausage". Michelle asked her how many she wanted, two or three. Shee Yun lifted up both her open hands, and exclaimed, "TEN!" Of course, that's just crazy, and Michelle didn't give her ten. But this shows that Shee Yun was quite hungry after playing at the swimming pool.

Another funny thing is how Shee Yun got impatient and went to ask Michelle, "Is the sausage done?"

photos - new mattress

8 Dec 2008. Shee Yun and Chen Rui playing with a new mattress. We often put a mattress on the floor of the master bedroom so that they can play on it, or watch TV sitting on it. When not used, we put the mattress in the small bedroom / my home office. In these photos they were using it like a slide.

Shee Yun sometimes likes to play "upside down". Sometimes she asks me to carry her by her legs and dangle her upside down.

at the playground

21 Dec 2008. Shee Yun at the ball pool of the Jusco children's playground.

She wanted to build a tall mountain of balls, and asked me to help.

Chen Rui likes this dancing machine a lot and keeps returning to it and stepping on the pads. However when I offered to put a coin in to let her play for real she refused. In this photo she looks like she knows how to play, doesn't it?

飞车党来了!

Yesterday when Shee Yun played at the Jaya Jusco children's playground, we encountered a rather unpleasant experience. When Shee Yun was playing in the ball pool by herself peacefully, a little boy, probably around the same age, sat down beside her rudely, and threw a ball at her face! And he did it twice! Shee Yun wasn't bothering him at all. I don't know why the boy did this. What a badly behaved child. I was taking a video of Shee Yun using the digital camera, and recorded down the whole thing. Unfortunately it happened too fast and too suddenly and I could not stop the boy. I stopped the camera and went to sit between him and Shee Yun. His mother (or guardian) was not around. Otherwise I would have told her to take better care of her son. The mother had I think 4 children with her, and this boy seemed to be the second youngest among them. I wonder how his parents taught him. Is he so hostile to his siblings? Do his parents not teach him not to be so?

Thankfully the plastic balls were light and hollow and made of soft plastic, the type used in ball pools. So it probably shocked Shee Yun more than hurting her. The ball hit her left eyebrow. She immediately covered her face protectively with her hands. When she put down her hands, she averted her eyes from her attacker. I sat down between her and the boy. I asked her whether it hurt. She nodded quietly. I gently caressed her eyebrow to comfort her. She didn't cry. She just stayed quiet. I turned to the boy and looked at him sternly. I couldn't see his mother around, so I told him that he should not hit people like that. I told him twice. He just looked at me with a serious expression. I was very angry. In hindsight, maybe I should have located his mother and told her about what happened. This boy needs to be taught to behave better.

Michelle was very angry when she saw the video. She felt hurt and she pitied Shee Yun. Michelle worries whether Shee Yun is too timid and cannot fend for herself or stand up to bullying. Indeed when she is outside she is shy when there are strangers around. We will need to teach her to tell us when she is being bullied, and we will need to teach her to be smart and not to allow herself to be bullied.

Thankfully she wasn't really hurt in this incident. She soon forgot about it and continued to play. She kept trying to build a big heap of balls, by patiently picking one ball after another and putting them on top of a pile. There were a few times when other children saw the big tempting pile and dived into it or crashed into it. Shee Yun did not shout or scream. She just wagged a finger at the offender and protested softly "No". I think she doesn't like confrontation. Only when the offender was Chen Rui, then Shee Yun's "No" was louder and more stern.

On to happier subjects, something funny happened when Shee Yun and Chen Rui played with the bowling arcade game. There were two of those side by side, so I let Shee Yun play with the one on the right, and Chen Rui the left. Shee Yun started first. Chen Rui watched Shee Yun throw the ball, then picked up her own ball from her machine, and went to Shee Yun's machine to cast the ball! It took me completely by surprise and I couldn't have stopped her even if I had thought to do so. Trying to be smart, when Shee Yun's ball come back out, I asked Shee Yun to take it to Chen Rui's machine, and continue to play there, i.e. to have them swap machines. It worked fine at machine on the left, where Shee Yun was now playing. However the machine on the right jammed. It couldn't handle having two balls at the same time. The second ball, i.e. Chen Rui's, was stuck inside. A big blinking light went off, and a loud signal starting sounding. Soon an employee came over. I pretended to be innocent, and just told him, "Bola tak keluar lah" (the ball didn't come out). Shee Yun happily continued to play on the machine on the left. The employee had to fiddle with the machine for a while before being able to reset it. Thankfully he didn't ask me any questions, and just fixed it quickly. I still find it very funny now that I think about it.

Chen Rui sometimes tickles us. She makes a scratching motion with her hand on our stomach, or chest, or leg, and says "guji guji guji". I think I say "tickle tickle" when I tickle her, and it is Michelle who says "guji guji guji" when tickling her.

Chen Rui associates monkeys with the Bobos, and says "Bobo" after saying "markee" (monkey) or after seeing monkeys. The Bobos are two monkeys in the Dora the Explorer show.

Yesterday I played the Starfall website with Chen Rui. She now knows how to play some of the simpler games. There is one type of game where you are asked to sort the capital letters and the small letters of the same alphabet into two piles (A, B and E all have this activity). She knows how to play this and whenever a letter appears, she points at the correct pile and says, "这个" (this one). She can pretend to roar quite well, I discovered. When we did B and D, and the bear and the dinosaur roared, I imitated the roaring sound they made, and she followed suit. She did quite well!

bowling game

This was Chen Rui playing the bowling game at the Jaya Jusco amusement centre today. She got very excited when playing, and whenever she was waiting for the ball to come out of the machine again for the next shot, she got impatient and started complaining.

birthday celebration

We bought the birthday cake for Chen Rui, an ice-cream cake, at Baskin Robbins yesterday. It was chocolate chip ice-cream with a chocolate cake base. We got her a green coloured cake, because she likes green. She actually pointed at that green cake in the display.

It was a small cake, so the four of us share it. We just used spoons to eat it directly, without bothering to cut it up. Shee Yun helped herself with a small teaspoon. Michelle helped Chen Rui. After the children had had enough, there was only a little left to go, and Michelle and I finished it up. Then we suddenly noticed that Chen Rui was pooing. I wonder whether having had ice-cream triggered it. She squatted on the chair, and grunted now and then, which we seldom hear nowadays. At one point she even winced, which made us laugh out loud, because that's even rarer nowadays. When she was much younger she used to wince noticeably when she pooed. So this reminded me about then. So, while we were eating chocolate cake, she was also "making chocolate cake". How appetising.

21 Dec 2008. Chen Rui's birthday cake.

I don't think Shee Yun was holding Chen Rui's hand lovingly. I think she was trying to stop Chen Rui from grabbing the cake.

The birthday girl is two years old.

Trying to blow out the candles. I'm not sure eventually who blew them out.

I quite like this family photo.

Attacking the cake!

After we finished the cake, Shee Yun looked at the aftermath, and exclaimed, "Oh no! The cake is ruined!".
